Third installment of Rockgardn gear: On the menu for tonight are the GDX Goggles. In 2004, Rockgardn released their first goggle offering. While it had some nice features, it was by far not the best goggle to use. You learn from your mistakes and Rockgardn learned a lot from 2004. All the problems that the 2004 goggles had are all gone.
The 2005 GDX goggles lost the small profile of their 2004 predecessors but increased their field of view. If you had the 2004 goggles and tried to change the lenses you remember the cursing when you tried to get the lenses out of the frames. This year, the frame material is soft and pliable which makes lens changing is fast and easy. The 2005 model retains the quick buckle strap, which I love. Once you get the hang of it you can snap the buckle loose with one hand.
Mark designed this year's model with some thick, soft material around the frame of the goggles. The material extends down onto your nose, which I personally found uncomfortable but some may like it. He offers two optional lenses for the goggles - one is a blue tint that has a high contrast and the other is a red persimmon for varying conditions. This year the GDX goggle is compatible with Smith's tear off system. Tear off system could be worth investing in if you are going to run the optional lenses. The optional lenses, while very nice, tend to have a delicate coating that can scratch easy. Like other goggles that have no holes in the lenses, these goggles fog up when you are sitting still. The quick release strap helps with that problem.
The goggles have a very large field of view - larger than any of my Oakley goggles- thanks to its large lens..
The 2005 Rockgardn GDX model is a 100% improvement over last year's offering but still has a few minor bugs to work out. The buckle system on the strap is a great feature and I wonder why no one else uses some sort of quick release system. I give GDX goggles get a 8 out of 10 rating.
