Wham Bam Photo Jam

PORTLAND, OR (derailedonline.com) - The guys that put on the Wham Bam Thank You Jam dirt jump competition have come up with a new competition called the Wham Bam Photo Jam. These guy have put together a very original competition. This competition is a team of two (one photographer and one rider). Read below to find out more about this very creative competition that also has a very good purpose - help promote literacy and encourage reading to young kids.

The Wham Bam Photo Scavenger Hunt Approaches
Only one week remains until the Wham Bam Photo Scavenger Hunt kicks
off in Bend, Oregon on July 14th. The scavenger hunt spots are being
dialed in and the city of Bend is preparing for an onslaught of the
world’s best mountain bikers to arrive in their fine city.

The format of the event will be as follows. Teams of two will sign-in
at Northwest Adventure Cyclery (1346 NW Galveston Ave, Bend, OR
97701), beginning at 9am, with the official “send-off” at 10am.
Please pre-register your team by sending an e-mail with the members
of your team (teams of TWO only) to: riders@thewhambamthankyoujam.com.

At the 10am send-off, teams will receive directions to the ten spots
for the photo scavenger hunt and then will have the next five hours
to capture photos at each spot. As an added bonus to this year’s
event, the hunt will support the Oregon non-profit SMART (Start
Making A Reader Today). Along the course organizers will read to kids
at the Bend Public Library and while being photographed will present
them with t-shirts and books to encourage reading. Not only will
there be prizes awarded to the fastest teams, but also to the teams
with the most creative, artistic and stylish photos.

The prize packages include over $6,000 in prizes, including generous
cash prizes, Target gift cards, and plenty of bike clothes, gear and
components to go around.

The Wham Bam Photo Scavenger Hunt is a combination freeride mountain
bike competition and photography contest, with the emphasis of the
event focused on having a good time riding mountain bikes. Riders are
encouraged to bring their MOUNTAIN BIKES, as some of the spots
require some singletrack riding and pedaling.

At 3pm, all of the digital cameras with removable media cards will be
returned to the finish area, where there will be a short break for
judging. Riders will reconvene at Parillas Grill at 8pm for the prize
ceremony, slideshow, and party—with food and beer being provided by
Pabst Blue Ribbon.

The after-party will be open to the public and will also feature a
raffle, which will be a fund-raiser for the Central Oregon Trail
Alliance, who was instrumental in the construction of all the trails
that are being used for the Photo Scavenger Hunt.

On Sunday, there will be a group ride for the pro riders consisting
of a 4,000-foot descent over a 30-mile span, dropping in at 7,000
feet. Cog Wild Bike Tours will shuttle riders and their bikes to the
base of Broken Top Mountain, with the ride ending on the outskirts of
Bend.

The Wham Bam Photo Scavenger Hunt is being supported by the following
companies: Target, PBR, Nike 6.0, Dakine, FSA/Gravity, Yakima,
Atomlab, Diamondback, EVS Protection, Deity Components, e.thirteen,
Republik Clothing, CogWild Bike Tours, and Northwest Adventure Cyclery.

“We wanted to put on a fun contest where no one feels the pressure
to do a backflip off a huge drop. We know that all the riders are
preparing for Crankworx, but we still want to have fun riding bikes
in between events, and the photo freeride scavenger hunt will do just
that,” says event founder Aaron Lutze. “We’re going to keep the
fun theme behind the Wham Bam going, while still offering up a
professionally-run event for all the riders to enjoy.”

The Wham Bam events are growing steadily, starting with one event in
2006, three events in 2007, and the events will continue to grow in
2008. The professional and amateur ranks of freeriders have spoken
and asked for a North American slopestyle series, and that’s exactly
where Wham Bam is headed.
