NC State DH Championships

MARS HILL, NC ( - Downhill returned to the western North Carolina at Wolf Mountain, once location to many southeast downhill races. Gravity racing had returned to Wolf with the NC State DH Championships as the culmination of two gravity events this year. One dual slalom event was held at Wolf prior to this weekend.

Wolf Laurel DH

Still underneath the heatwave that is blanketing the southeast and most of the US, this weekends event was hot and humid - unfamiliar conditions for west North Carolina mountains. The course consisted of the dirt that Wolf mountain is so very famous for - inches and inches deep of loamy dirt with few to any rocks. Race organizer, course designer, and owner of MBRP, Inc., Ryan Taylor was the man in charge of bringing DH back to the Wolf Mountain at the new Wolfridge resort. Course times were around the three minute mark. The start gate opened up into loamy turns followed by the largest technical feature of the course, a step down. After some back and forth open slope sprints, the course ended in some tight wooded section and a sprint to the finish line.

Open/Pro class ran qualifies then all amateur classes followed. After the amateurs were finished the Open/Pro class both men and women competed in their finals. This gave the Open/Pro classes more spectators and the amateurs a chance to do some heckling as their friends came down on their final race runs.

A DS race followed the DH later in the afternoon. Racing action on the DS was done on a newly constructed course different than the previous events. Unfortunately, due to engagements, we were not able to stay to cover the events on the DS race.
