Windham GES #3 Race Results
WINDHAM, New York (derailedonline.com) - Close to another weekend of true NE style DH racing in wet, sloppy, muddy conditions and another race down on the Gravity East Calendar. Windham Mountain will be the site of the 2010 UCI World Cup finals so this was the first chance for riders to preview what will be used for next years UCI competition and race on what will become a World Cup course.
Weekend started out with bad conditions on Saturday with constant ran from the morning till the end of the day. Rain came down during practice and main event of the Dual Slalom. With the decision of some positions being decided by who could stay up on their bike. Some competitors were using their DH rigs with mud spikes and doing quite well. The unstoppable Neko Mullaly - current points leader in the GES Slalom series - came out once again on the top run of the pro men. Daney Lauren pulled out a win in the pro women.
Everyone woke Sunday to sunny beautiful weather; however, with the rain that saturated the mountain Saturday there was going to be no chance for the DH course to dry out. Soon parts of the course started to turn into mud with the consistency of puddy. Not a single feature or portion of the trail wasn't covered in a thick coating of mud that reached up to 6-8" in some areas. Roots, rocks, logs - didn't matter everything was coated. The race came down to a fitness race, who could power their bike through the sludge the fastest without zapping all their energy. Fastest time of the day was put down by former World Champion Jurgen Beneke with a time of 4:09.16. Dawn Bourque lead a healthy pack of pro/Cat 1 women to a win with a respectable 5:23.56.
