ROXBURY, New York (derailedonline.com) - Gravity East Series 2009 concluded yesterday for the third year in a row at Plattekill Mountain Bike Park in Roxbury, New York. Conditions were cold and wet but the course was great and competition was tense.
Dual Slalom concluded on Saturday on the steep and fast slalom course constructed at Plattekill. Many competitors, including myself, were racing on DH bikes as the course was fit for such equipment. The loose rocks made for some great racing as a few wrecks dictated the outcome in some of the classes including Pro. Neko Mullaly (Specialized/Team America - Reading,PA), who has dominated the DS series this year with perfect first place scores, was unseated from the top of the podium by Alejandro Ortiz (Nema/Morpheous - Ecuador) due to a wreck toward the end of the competition. Kyle Karpuska (Von Cooper - Storrs Mansfield, CT) grabbed second place, Mullaly in third, and Ben Hulse (Sycamore - Boone, NC) - in fourth. In the pro women Karen Eagan (Sam Adams - Lowell, MA) took home first place. Lauren Daney (Inspired Athletes - Stafford, VA) came in second and Kate Parhiala (Ryde - Arlington, MA) took third.
The Gravity East Series e.Thirteen Slalom Champions were crowned during the same ceremony. It was a clear win for Neko Mullaly in the men with his five perfect number one finishes this year. Alejandro Ortiz started late in the season but managed to capture second for the year followed by Brian Piper.
As expected, Karen Egan took home the number one spot and the check for the top women rider in this years slalom series. Following her was Kate Parhiala in second and Lauren Daney in third.

Sunny skies came Sunday to dry the rain that fell Friday and Saturday. Competitors found the DH course on Sunday to be dryer than Saturday but actually more slippery than the day before. Practice and a couple hundred runs down the course improved conditions toward the 11 o'clock hour race time start. As start time rolled around the pro classes were the first to take the course with Neko Mullaly setting what would become the fastest time of the day at two minutes and thirty-two seconds (2:32!). Approximately five races had hit the gate when disaster struck and the timing equipment, provided by Plattekill, had a failure. As racers piled on top of the mountain everyone stood waiting for repairs to be completed. Repairs were completed but this set in motion unforeseen issues that would later arise. The category one, two, and three men made their race runs without any problems, but as the women took the course and later toward the end of the race other timing issues cropped up that cause under-fourteen women to have to all complete re-runs of their race due to timing issues. Timing issues were never resolved so the under-fourtheen women all agreed they would take the results as they were.
Neko Mullaly with his extremely fast run of 2:32.33 stood strong all day as the fastest time of the day. The closest time to Mullaly was Jason Memmelaar (Two Wheel Freaks - Chester, NY) with a time of 2:36.00. Ben Moody (Rhino - Thornton, MA) took third with a 2:38.39, James Ford (Chappaque, NY) in fourth with 2:41.25, and Alejandro Ortiz in firth with 2:41.85.
Dawn Bourque (Rhino - Campton,NH) with a time of 3:19.15 grabbed first place. Following Bourque was Karen Eagan clocking a 3:26.63. For third Stephanie Gubernat (Cutlers - Snecksville, PA) ran a 3:46.94.
Signing of the Pro Checks.
Trohies, Jerseys, prizes, and cash money was distrubted following Sundays race to the competitors that were crowned Gravity East Series DH Champions. Comprised of eleven total events, hundreds of racers competed traveling many miles to many different venues along the east coast. A long hard road for many that paid off in the end for a few.
Taking the double crown this year for the Pro Men in downhill and dual slalom was Mr. Neko Mullaly. Mullaly became unreachable in points toward the end of the season with his very impressive overall performance throughout 2009. Following Mullaly on the podium for second place overall in the series points was Jasom Memmelaar. Also winning second in the slalom points chase, Alejandro Ortiz captured third place for this year in downhill.
Familiar to this spot on the podium, Dawn Bourque was the clear winner in the Pro Womens GES points chase for 2009. To Bourque's right on the podium for second place was Karen Eagan. In third for 2009 was Stephan Gubernat.
