VANCOUVER, Canada (derialedonline.com) - Whistler and Blackcomb Resorts will be sold February 19th. In a public notice just published by owner Intrawest ULC, Whistler and Blackcomb resorts will be sold in an auction on February 19th to generate necessary funds.
Due to the current condition of the economy, Intrawest ULC have missed a payment on a $1.4 billion USD loan - do the math on that payment! This will require Intrawest to auction off their two largest assets.
Organizers for the 2010 Olympic Games have said they are confident that this will not affect the activities scheduled to take place at the venues for the 2010 games.
There is no way to determine how this situation will affect the mountain biking activities. The answer will not come till a new owner is announced. However, it's safe to say that Whistler being the most profitable mountain biking venue in the world and the fact that the mountain has made more money in summer mountain biking operations than it has in winter operates that whoever purchases the mountain would make a terrible financial mistake of not continuing the mountain biking operations.
In addition to the Canadian resorts, Intrawest owns Winter Park Resort in Colorado, Panorama Mountain Village in British Columbia, Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia and Mountain Creek in New Jersey, all of which have summer bike parks. There has been no announcement that any of those resorts will be sold.
