SANTIAGO, Chile (derailedonline.com) - At 4am today a earthquake rocked Chile registering 8.8 on the Richter scale. On the heels of the ever popular Valparaiso Cerro Abajo Urban Downhill Race in Chile and right before one of the National races, the earthquake has significantly damaged a lot of the infrastructure in Chile. Many racers are still in Chile awaiting to race the National race after the urban race. The race has been, of course, canceled.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Chile in this time of devastation. We wish all the best and that survivors are found quickly.

Amazingly they have restored a lot of the infrastructure to major cities. Power, phone, internet, and cell phones have been returned to operation. Damage is widespread and there are Tsunami warning as far Hawaii.

Fraser at Transcend has been in touch with some of the people on the ground since he recently got back home from Chile Valparaiso urban race. He's got a video recording of a Skype call to Fillip Polc and Chris Van Dine who are still there in country, stuck till the airport is restored to operation.

Click here to view the video and more information on the earthquake.

The Pro GRT is a downhill-only series for 2010 and will visit four states from April to September, beginning with a return visit to Port Angeles, Wash. for the Northwest Cup , April 24-25.
Each of the five stops will offer series ranking points to top finishers, resulting in overall individual titles for professional men and women.
COLUMBIA, South Carolina (derailedonline.com) - Over two years ago in Lancaster County, South Carolina two cyclist were hit and killed by a driver of a car that was distracted using a cell phone. The driver of that car, Sharon King, was convicted of killing 49-year-old Thomas Hoskins and 43-year-old Lee Anne Barry.

The fatal accident left Hoskins, Sherri Hoskins, wife a widow and their kids fatherless.

The cell phone was identified as the causing factor for the accident and in a U.S. Federal Court case the judge has awarded an almost $5million settlement to the family of Hoskins for damages and legal fees. The case for Lee Anne Barry was settled in state court with that settlement being for $2.5million.

Ms. King had admitted that she was distracted while operating the car. The combination of the vehicle, cell phone distraction, and bicycles on the road combined to create an unfortunate deadly scenario that unfolded.

In the last couple yeas, many state in the US have put bans on certain cell phone usage while operating a car. Rhode Island was the most recent by enacting a ban on text messaging while driving.

AGILE, Switzerland (derailedonline.com) - Fallen slightly under the radar, UCI has made a significant change to the rules of jerseys on the UCI world cup circuit. UCI has reinstated the rule that National Champions must wear their National Championship jersey during all timed runs and on the podium. This rule was removed when Steve Peat previously challenged the rule and fought to have it removed.

Why is this bad for the sport? Racers who are concerned about sponsorships will now be not inclined to participate in National Championship competitions. Cause the UCI limitations on National Championship jerseys do not allow for very large logos and limit the total number of logos.

Steve Peat petitioned for this rule to be removed cause of the glaring impacts in could have on the sport. The petition was granted and the restriction was removed. Now UCI has - without reason - reinstated the rule.

Join Pinkbike in petitioning again for UCI to remove this regulation from the World Cup circuit.

WATSONVILLE, CA (derailedonline.com)—Fox Racing Shox has made an exclusive arrangement with the Miyaki Company of Japan to use its Kashima Coat for mountain bike suspension components. Kashima Coat will make its consumer debut in Fox Racing Shox’s 2011 model year aftermarket fork line.

Fox Racing Shox marketing manager Elayna Caldwell said the agreement gives Fox the exclusive ability to market mountain bike suspension products using Miyaki Kashima Coat branding. Caldwell said Fox does not currently use Kashima Coat for its motocross or ATV products, and if it did, it would not be an exclusive agreement as it is commonly used in those markets in suspension components and clutch and valve train assemblies because of its low-friction and ultra-wear resistance properties.

In the Kashima Coat process, lubricating molybdenum disulfide is deposited, via
electrical induction, into the billions of micropores on the surface of hard-anodized aluminum.

Throughout last season, select Fox-sponsored athletes tested and raced on the international mountain bike racing circuit on suspension treated with Kashima Coating. The distinctive gold-colored, Kashima coated stanchions maintained better lubrication characteristics, and the aluminum components treated with Kashima Coat attained a level of hardness and abrasion resistance four times tougher than standard hard-anodized aluminum.

“Before we started using Kashima Coat, we’d been testing and racing on electroless nickel coated upper tubes during the past two seasons,” said Mark Fitzsimmons, FOX Racing Shox mountain bike race manager. “Although the friction properties were decent, the nickel’s durability was not. The Kashima parts we raced on maintained the low friction requirements we were after and exhibited excellent durability—a very rare combination to find at the World Cup level with its wet and muddy conditions.”

Beyond added durability, the significant decrease in friction provided a tangible
increase in suspension performance. Athletes who tested and raced with Kashima coated Fox suspension, including 2008 Downhill World Champion Gee Atherton, reported an improved overall consistency and feel.

Caldwell said although it has applications for rear shocks as well, Fox will only
introduce the coating on its forks for 2011. Fox will release the specifics on which forks will receive the treatment to media at Sea Otter.

VANCOUVER, Canada (derialedonline.com) - Whistler and Blackcomb Resorts will be sold February 19th. In a public notice just published by owner Intrawest ULC, Whistler and Blackcomb resorts will be sold in an auction on February 19th to generate necessary funds.

Due to the current condition of the economy, Intrawest ULC have missed a payment on a $1.4 billion USD loan - do the math on that payment! This will require Intrawest to auction off their two largest assets.

Organizers for the 2010 Olympic Games have said they are confident that this will not affect the activities scheduled to take place at the venues for the 2010 games.

There is no way to determine how this situation will affect the mountain biking activities. The answer will not come till a new owner is announced. However, it's safe to say that Whistler being the most profitable mountain biking venue in the world and the fact that the mountain has made more money in summer mountain biking operations than it has in winter operates that whoever purchases the mountain would make a terrible financial mistake of not continuing the mountain biking operations.

In addition to the Canadian resorts, Intrawest owns Winter Park Resort in Colorado, Panorama Mountain Village in British Columbia, Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia and Mountain Creek in New Jersey, all of which have summer bike parks. There has been no announcement that any of those resorts will be sold.

Kovarik crossed the finish line to claim his fourth National title and his first title since 2002 ahead of race favorite Hill. Hill crashed just meters from the finish line but quickly grabbed his bike and crossed the finish line for a 5th place finish.

"Although it was pretty good, I wasn't really happy with the time. I was hoping to go two seconds faster than my qualifying time but I've just done the same time," Kovarik said.

"Hard luck to Sam coming off on that last corner and giving it to me. I was just watching the times and think he would have had it by half a second (if he didn't crash)."

A lot of attention was on the Under 19 men's race won by the rising Australian DH star Troy Brosnan of South Australia. Despite making mistakes, he blew away the field to capture the win ahead of Daniel Lavis and Aden Wyber.

Brosnan is touted as Australia's next big DH star and eyes are watching his performance as he competes this year on the Jr circuit.

DANA POINT, California (bikemag.com) - On a weekend when mountain bikers were to be celebrating our sport at the Dam Cold Downhill race in Bootleg Canyon, Nevada, many will instead be attending a memorial service for that race’s spirited organizer.

Dave “Crash” Collins, who had devoted much of his energy to promoting races on Bootleg Canyon’s downhill trails, passed on January 8 following an intense battle with cancer. His passing came just 10 days short of his 48th birthday.

Mere weeks before being diagnosed with terminal cancer in late November 2009, Collins had announced his ambitious plans for the Dam Cold Downhill, a new pro-am that promised a $20,000 prize purse. The race, which was scheduled for January 16-17, was designed to give local racers a rare opportunity to compete against some of the world’s fastest pros.

Among those who had been expected to participate were the likes of Sam Hill, Cedric Gracia and brothers Gee and Dan Atherton. But due to the severity of Collins’ cancer—it was already in the advanced stages by the time he was diagnosed—he was unable to continue organizing the race and it was cancelled.

Collins’ passing comes just one year after that of his friend and fellow Bootleg Canyon trail advocate Brent Thompson, a trail builder who had almost single-handedly hewn the canyon’s impressive singletrack network. The 56-year-old Thompson passed away in February 2009 following complications from a heart attack, and Collins immediately began helping with his fundraiser and added a memorial ride to his own St. Patty’s Day Feast downhill race in mid-March.

“After Brent Thompson died, Dave kind of assumed the mantle of being a promoter of Bootleg Canyon, and he had developed really good relations with Boulder City businesses and bike shops and had helped them realize how much potential Bootleg really has,” said Collins’ friend Steve Boehmke, a bike industry PR and marketing veteran.

“He was always full of energy, and he was a driving force in raising the profile of Bootleg Canyon’s trails.”

A Southern California native, Collins grew up in Orange County during the beginning of the BMX and motocross craze. His father owned a motocross shop in Anaheim, and the young Collins cut his teeth racing moto and BMX bikes. In adulthood, he began riding road bikes, joining the Fullerton-based road bike club Team Velocity.

In his 30s, Collins transitioned into mountain biking, racing downhill for Chumba and later for Mountain Cycle. He became a regular on Thursday-night group rides in Fullerton, California.

“He would show up to the Fullerton Loop, which is mostly a cross-country ride, on a downhill bike with a single ring, and would be hitting jumps and having all kinds of fun,” Boehmke says. “It was as if he was 12 years old again—he was doing all the shit we used to do on bikes as kids in the 70s.

“He brought that youth and playfulness to our Thursday night rides, and reminded us to stay kid-like in your riding and in your life. That was a real inspiration to me. And now that he’s gone, he’s proof that we’re here for a good time, not a long time.”

Like many in our sport, Collins’ youthful energy was also infused with a healthy dose of angst, and run-ins with the law landed him in prison for a year in his early 40s. Friends say that Collins emerged a much calmer man, with a sharpened focus on what he wanted to accomplish in life.

He resumed riding his mountain bike, competed in the Red Bull Road Rage and dedicated himself to developing and promoting races like the St. Patty’s Day Feast and Dam Cold Downhill. He built relationships with athletes, businesses and media, and was tireless in rallying support for his events.

Collins’ go-big-or-go-home approach to life and riding had its consequences: Last July, he crashed badly while training at Fontana, cracking his right kneecap in half and sidelining him for months. During his down time, his left leg atrophied, and in a random fall he tore his meniscus and ACL and later developed a sizeable bump on his left knee.

“The doctor said that big bump on his knee was a hematoma,” said Collins’ wife Terri. “He went into surgery to have what we thought was a hematoma removed, and it turned out to be a big wad of cancer. They did tests and found out that it had already spread to his brain, lungs, liver and vascular system.”

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, January 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the San Clemente Community Center, 100 North Calle Seville, San Clemente, California, 92672. Those wishing to make suggestions for eulogy remarks, remembrances or activities for the service are asked to send their requests in an e-mail to frknsty04@yahoo.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Collins’ honor. Some Boulder City residents and businesses have already organized fundraisers to help Collins’ family cover his medical expenses, and inquiries on how to make such donations should also be directed to the above e-mail.

GRANADA, Spain (derailedonline.com) - Swedish downhill star Dennis Dertell has been signed onto the 23 Degree Sports Management team by owner Martin Whiteley. Dertell has been winning races in many different disciples in his home country as well as competing in several world cups in 2009.

Unlike the rest of the 23 Degrees crew, Dertell will not be riding for a major international team. Instead Dertell will be flying the 23 Degrees colors which haven't graced a racer since 2006. He will be piloting a Trek Session 88 for the 2010 series provided to him by 23 Degrees. Not surprising seeing Whiteley runs the Trek World Racing team.

At only 20 years old, Dennis Dertel has already won 15 national titles in Sweden in road, 4X, cross-country and downhill disciplines. 2008 he became Sweden's junior downhill champion (no championships took place in 2009).

Martin Whiteley, owner of 23 Degrees, which runs the Trek World Racing squad, said: "I'd heard about this kid from the iXS Cups in 2008. He had a lot of success, winning junior races and finishing second overall, as well as getting a podium on scratch.

"His riding [at the World Cups] in La Bresse and Maribor was impressive but immaturity and over-excitement robbed him of some solid placings. We're keen to give him a shot and help him achieve his first World Cup top 20."

Dertell said: "I'm so excited for this, it's like a dream coming true for me. I've been working hard for this and I have a feeling that this year is going to be a great year. It's my birthday today and I received the bike and have just built it up. I'm about to hit the snow!"

BOSTON, Massachusetts (derailedonline.com) - Ski Market scheduled to be sold and auctioned off by early part of February. According to the notice filed in U.S. Bankruptcy court, bids are for all the assets owned by Ski Market are due Jan. 27. After which an auction will take place Feb. 1.

If you are an entrepreneur in the New England area and want to get a kick start to your new outdoor or bike shop related ventures, this may be a golden opportunity. Ski Market assets are large and vast with over 40 locations in the New England area.

No information has come out on pertaining to the debts owed by Ski Market to many of it's creditors which includes a few bicycle companies. One can assume the auction will generate revenue to pay those debts off and clear the accounts in order to terminate the company.
